Since arriving to Medellin Colombian about 8 days ago, we’ve had the chance to wander around and get a feel for the city. In the following video, I discuss all of the fears and safety concerns I had prior to getting here.
Play the video below to get a newbies perspective on what it’s like to be a foreigner in Colombia, South America.

Cartess, I hope you’re documenting this life transition so you can share with us (in an ebook or some other way) the the challenges, the joys, how to create an income, etc., etc., for those of us who are thinking about following in your footsteps. There’s a lady by the name of Jackie Lange who used to live in Texas, but moved to Panama about 10 years ago. In addition to doing real estate and other income-producing businesses, she does what she calls “Panama Relocation Tours”. ( PanamaRelocationTours.com) She does those several times a year so she can show people the in’s and out’s of becoming an expat. Maybe that’s something you’d want to consider at some point! I’m excited for you and your family!
HI Mike,
Thanks for the feedback … Those are indeed some great ideas. I’ll check out the Panama tour website and see what she has going on. While at dinner over the weekend, we discussed this with some new friends we met. I’m going to pass this post along to them, as this would fall more in line with what they’re doing, but I’ll certainly be creating some income producing options to show people how to escape the 9-to-5 grind so they can live and do whatever they like. Thanks for taking the time to comment, I appreciate ya!
It sounds like the Promise Land!
Exactly what I have been looking for, for many many years!!
God Bless You for sharing your results with the rest of us!
I still find it hard to believe the quality of life you can live out here … I’ll continue to post updates regularly, so be on the look out.
Hello have you considered the TAX Burden? 33% for ALL foreign income worldwide. I have tax info if you are interested .
I’m interested. I’ll get a tax attorney or accountant to figure all this stuff out. I imagine there’s all types of ways to skin this cat. Please send to: cartess@cartessross.com
We plan to retire in Panama but now you’ve peaked our interest in Colombia. Schools are a major concern for our three youngest children. What has been your experience with the schools?
hi Lori … Haven’t looked into the schools since being here. We ‘homeschool’ our youngsters.
